TSMOUTH, R.I.-(19-5-2003) The Olympic Sailing Committee (OSC) of US
SAILING, national governing body for the sport, has named the final members
of its 2003 Pan American Games Team-Sailing. Pending approval from the U.S.
Olympic Committee (Colorado Springs, Colo.), these sailors will represent
the U.S.A. at the XIV Pan American Games, scheduled for August 1-17, 2003,
in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, that will be staged from Club Nautico.
The U.S.A. had qualified to enter the nine originally scheduled sailing
events, and had conducted trials to select competitors for each, when word
was received last month that organizers would cut the number of planned
events. Initial reports indicated that only the events for sailing which
utilize the same equipment found in Olympic competition (Laser and Mistral)
would remain on the program for Santo Domingo. Following a strong lobby
from sailing officials, the President of the Pan American Sports
Organizations has confirmed that the sport has received a one-time exemption
that will allow events with a “technical equivalent” to those disciplines
scheduled for the 2004 Olympic Regatta to remain. The result is the
elimination of the Lightning from the competition lineup in Santo Domingo.
Listed below by class (discipline) are the members of the USA’s 2003 Pan Am
Games Team-Sailing, who will compete in Santo Domingo:
Hobie 16 (open doublehanded catamaran) Paul Hess and Mary Ann Hess (both
Napa, Calif.)
J/24 (open keelboat) Tim Healy (Newport, R.I.), Nick Judson (Nantucket,
Mass.), Gordon Borges (Newport, R.I.) and Davenport Crocker (Cohasset,
Mass.)
Laser (men’s singlehanded dinghy) Benjamin Richardson (Gloucester, Mass.)
Laser Radial (women’s singlehanded dinghy) - Sally Barkow (Pine Lake, Wisc.)
Mistral Men (men’s windsurfer) - Peter Wells (Newport Beach, Calif.)
Mistral Women (women’s windsurfer) - Lanee Butler (Aliso Viejo, Calif.)
Snipe (open doublehanded dinghy) Henry Filter (Stevensville, Md.) and Lisa
Griffith (San Diego, Calif./Phillipsburg, N.J.)
Sunfish (open singlehanded dinghy) Jeff Linton (Tampa, Fla.)
All of the sailors who qualified for the 2003 Pan Am Games Team-Sailing,
including Lightning sailors Brian Taboada (Island Heights, N.J.), Theresa
Parker Colantuono (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Ryan Dunn (Brick, N.J.), become
members of the 2003 US Sailing Team.
